How Not to Sell your Accessories

If you have made accessories for a while, you will know what learning the skill is one thing, knowing how to sell it is an entirely different ball game, and requires a different skill set.

A lot of people ask me, ” Stephanie, can I really Ankara Accessories?” and my response is a big yes.

You just need to know how to sell.

I have been selling accessories since 2004. I’ve done beads, wires, ankara, the whole works, so from my experience I would like to share with you the things that have not worked for me in my business.

BB Broadcasts

This can work the first few times you use it, and it is great to do this when you are just starting out a business. However if you do this all the time, people are going to delete you or if they are nice, they will just ignore you.

This can also happen because most times, the people on your BB are not your target market. If you like, sell from today till tomorrow, if they don’t need your accessories, they won’t buy.

Please note that you can still use your BB to market effectively, you can even do broadcasts once in a while, but please don’t send people broadcasts all the time. It will backfire.

Social Media Spamming

This is when all your social media posts are about selling your product. You turn people off, because sometimes people have other things they are dealing with. They don’t want to always see “Buy! Buy! Buy! Buy! Buy!”

Talk about other things that your customers would be interested in, and you might catch their interest.

Please note that Social Media is great, but you have to use it well or else it won’t work for you.

If at all you want to use flyers, you have to be SUPER strategic about how you use it. It is not enough to have a flyer and just spread it to everyone…people don’t really read flyers, they throw them away. Everybody is doing flyers so you really don’t stand out when you do it and from my experience, this has not really been a good use of my marketing budget.

I hope this helps. If you want to learn more about how to effectively sell your accessories, you can send me a mail at We have a new course coming up, and we would love to see a lot more successful accessories designers.

In the comments below, I would like to hear your views about what works and what does not work.

Thank you in advance for sharing, and please share this blog post with friends you know who need it.

Lots of love

For me,Facebook, Whatsapp and BBM just gets people’s notiCe but not the money in their pocket. I carry the bags i make and it catches both their attention and their money.
I hope to get more than noticed from the social media I mentioned but I don’t rely on them. All the best to all of us!!!

Carrying and wearing your bags, shoes, earing bangles catches people attention and makes them interested not only to buy but also want to have the knowledge.
