Standard Chartered Bank’s Dragons Den

Hello darl,

I have good news for you today.

Some weeks ago, I was nominated from Wimbiz to present my business to a panel of business leaders and compete for a grant for my business. It was organized by Standard Chartered Bank’s Women Association and they aptly tagged the competition, Dragon’s Den.

10 women were selected from each of these organizations: Wimbiz, Fate Foundation and Leap Foundation.

The session started with a financial planning seminar. Dr. Adeyemi Osindero, the Director and Head of West Africa Private Equity at Standard Chartered Private Equity spoke to us about raising capital for your business. Mrs Bukky George, the MD of HealthPlus & Cassabella spoke to us about business structure and Mrs Adeola Azeez, spoke to us about networking.

Can’t wait to tell you about what I gained from these presentations but these are topics for another day, subscribe to this website to get updates of our new blog posts. Just fill the box on the right.

After the sessions, 5 people were selected from the 30 of us to present to the “Dragons” based on the strength of the proposals we had sent earlier.

I won the 1st runner up prize and got some money for my business.

Yaaaayyyyyyyy!!!!!! All my ladies, Kukere.

I included the video of the song so that you can dance with me. Lol

Winning the award and the money was great, but what really made me happy was that this award validated my business model. I’m not so crazy after all.

Some days before I went for this presentation, I watched Jobs, a movie on Steve Jobs, you must have heard about it.

The movie started with Steve Jobs presenting at the launch of the iPod.

He didn’t start by saying, “this is a music player that can play 1000 songs”

He said:

“The device I am going to share with you tonight is a revolutionary one…it is a music player.

Because what it represents is as important as what it is.

It is a tool for the heart and when you can touch someone’s heart, that is limitless.

It is a music player. It is 1000 words in your pocket.

I like to introduce you to the iPod”

I played this clip over and over and over again, and this is what inspired my presentation.

It’s not enough to have a great business, you need to know how to sell it.

Start with “the why”.

It’s not by luck that people queue up for days to buy a new Apple product, why are they not queueing up for days to buy other devices?

It’s not about the technology, it’s about what Apple stands for, why Apple is in existence in the first place.

So when they make a pitch, they don’t start by talking about all the techy jargons they used to make the product, they start by telling you why they made the product.

Do a bit of soul searching to find the purpose of your business and start telling people about it.

Please if you see any woman who works in Standard Chartered Bank, hug her for me. Hahahahaha

They also gave us a book in our goody pack.

I’ll do a review after I finish reading it.

As usual, I would love to hear from you in the comments below.

Hello Jummy, thank you for your comment. Number (1), To start a business, look for something you like to do, something you are really interested in. (2) After that, look for how the thing you have found solves a problem. (3) Start with anything you have. So let’s say you like fashion designing and you like to sew clothes. One of the complaints people have is that tailors always disappoint them, so your value proposition can be we’ll make clothes for you and we won’t disappoint you. The 3rd step will be to start your business in your room. Lol. Tell your friends about it, collect an advance from them, use that to buy the materials you need for the clothes, etc. You get my drift?

To start a blog, the first thing you need to be clear about is why you want to start a blog. One good reason can be to promote your business. There are 2 popular blogging sites, wordpress and blogspot. Visit the sites and try to follow the instructions they give you step by step. It’s pretty straight forward. Please visit for more tips on that.

      Hope this helped
