Mandela’s legacy

Just before I slept yesterday, I heard that Mandela had died.

Now I was not sure whether to believe this because a while ago, there were a lot of speculations and people were coming up with different stories about his death, meanwhile he was still alive.

But by the time I woke up this morning, looked at all the BB updates on my phone and even checked some international news site, I finally believed it.

Papa Mandela has gone to be with the Lord at the ripe age of 95.

May his soul rest in peace.

Now I know that on TV, we are going to start watching documentaries of his life, that will tell us the story of  how he successfully fought against apartheid and became an international icon of peace and reconciliation.

This will inspire us and we will say to ourselves, “I am going to change the world”

Now the thing about inspiration is that, it is not enough. People get inspired and do absolutely nothing about their situation and remain the same, motivational speaker after motivational speaker.

So today, I am going to give you one action point you can use to change your world.

Change your own life.

Fulfil your own potential and take advantage of the opportunities that you have available to you.

Some people do not have access to education or the internet, some cannot start up a business, do not have freedom of speech, etc. You have opportunities that some people died for or went to prison to fight for. Take a look around you and look for opportunities that can inspire you to fulfil your own potential.

Now changing your own life first might not sound like a logical step when you are trying to change the world, but the truth is that when you are changing your own life, you are in fact changing  the world because it creates a ripple effect and  you inspire people just by being a living example of possibilities.

You will hear them say, “If she can do it, I can do it”, “If she did not give up, I won’t give up”. Before you know it, you have affected a lot more lives than you could ever imagine.

I leave you with the words of Margaret Mead,

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has”

I would like to hear from you in the comments below, what opportunity can you see around you that you are going to take full advantage of starting from today.

Talk to you soon.

My thoughts when I heard about his death too. He fought a good fight and finished his course. The world knows that he came, his story will be told to generations unborn… Then I said to myself what about you? What story will your life tell? Who will hear it?
