Help!!!!! I have so many interests

You are not alone.

If you are a creative person, you will find that you are always interested in learning new things and many at times, people start calling you Jack of all trades. Haha…or Jane of all trades.

Some people will even call it Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD), because you can’t focus on one thing for too long.

Today’s blog post will be taking all about how to deal with this mild form of ADD.

Nothing is wrong with you.

This is just the process of discovery. You are just trying to discover what you like and what you don’t like.

You can’t think that you would like something, you actually have to experience it to know whether you like it or not.

It’s like, if you have never tasted ice-cream before, you can see a picture and like how it looks, but if you have never tasted it, you will never know what it tastes like…you will just be speculating.

It is only after you taste it, that you will know whether you like it or not.

PS: I have seen some people who don’t like icecream.

Let me give you some more examples:

I thought I would like knitting and so I learnt how to knit. Later I discovered that I did not have the patience to sit down for too long, and so I dropped it.

I thought I would like baking, and so I learnt how to bake. I can’t even remember why I stopped baking but I guess it could not hold my attention long enough. I still like to watch Cake Boss and all those baking shows on TV, but ehhhh I just salute them from a distance.

I thought I would like to make clothes, and so I went to learn how to make clothes. Later I discovered that I did not have the patience to sew dresses. I have a lot of admiration for people who can sew but I now know that it is not for me.

“People always used to ask me, why don’t you make clothes? You mean you only make accessories?”

I say yes and they are shocked.

The process of experimenting helped me to find myself, and it will help you too, if you open up yourself to experiment and try new things. I discovered what I liked and what I didn’t like. I don’t have to copy what every other person is doing because it’s me that will suffer for it.

I made accessories for quite a long time, about 10 years now and one of the reasons I loved accessories is that I didn’t have to spend days making one accessory. In fact if any accessory takes too long to make, I won’t make it again and I won’t make it for sale.

I just can’t deal!

Another advantage of trying different things is that even though I don’t knit or bake anymore, no knowledge is wasted. I can pick different elements from all the things I have learnt to create a unique piece.

For instance, accessories are not the only things I have a huge interest in. I’m also very interested in technology and business, and I have spent years learning more about these topics. When I combined these three things together, I created ST Colours A-School.

Discover your own unique set of interests, and build a unique brand. (Click on the link to tweet)

I have tried to do this, but this year as part of my birthday resolutions, I want to take it one step further. I am consolidating all my plenty plenty activities into one unique platform, and I look forward to receiving you on the other side. From next week, my blog posts will be on the that platform, alongside the other things I also do.

PS: You don’t have to subscribe again if you are already subscribed here.

I would love to hear from you, what is your unique set of interests. It does not matter how far apart they are, share them with us in the comments below.

Hope you liked this post, please share it with your friends using the social media buttons around.

Thank you so much for all the Happy Birthday comments and messages. I was so overwhelmed. I spent the whole day saying “Thank you”. Lol. You really made my day. Mmuah!

Hello Anuri, you asked an amazing question. That is the question I asked myself for many years, but I have found that it will come with time. Keep following your heart and exploring new things. One day, you will see a thread that connects all the dots. I’ll do a post on this next week.

Hi steph. I belong to this club ” Jane of All Trade”. And I find myself good at it. In less than 3months I find myself competent so that inspires me to do more training in different aspect. Basically I’m into fashion designing and I see fashion designing as a wide concept. That’s the sewing aspect, bead making, Ankara shoe and bags, making up and gele tieing, hat making. Is that really to much for a fashion designer???
